With the Cambridge Certificate: Legal, also known as the International Legal English Certificate (ILEC), special English language skills can be acquired for work in international law that correspond to the upper level. The course content was developed jointly by Cambridge English Language Assessment and the European legal language company, TransLegal.
Level of the ILEC
Legal corresponds to level B2/C1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Target groups of the ILEC
Legal is aimed at participants who work as lawyers in the international arena or are studying law. This high quality exam is designed specifically for law firms, business legal departments and government agencies.
The advantages of the ILEC
Legal not only enables law students to study law in English in their own country or abroad, but also increases their chances of finding a job in the international legal field. Lawyers can expand their activities into an international legal field, advance professionally in a company or improve their English language skills.
In the preparation course the different language variants (e.g. American English, British English) are used. Participants of different nationalities or with a different language background can also attend a preparation course. The exam certificates are recognized by thousands of employers, universities and governments worldwide and are valid for life.
The learning objectives of the ILEC
With this qualification participants can
- Practical use of English language skills in various situations,
- actively participate in meetings or discussions,
- clearly express their opinion,
- understand or write specific texts (e.g. memos, legal correspondence)
Registration for the ILEC
Participants can register directly at the respective examination center, where the examinations are held monthly on fixed examination dates.
The ILEC Exam
Examinations are conducted in about 300 examination centers worldwide, covering the following areas:
Reading and listening comprehension
Oral and written expression
Knowledge of grammar and vocabulary
Communication skills.
A variety of aids and materials, such as textbooks, worksheets, sample exams, can be used to prepare for the exam. The exam is divided into four parts
- 75 minutes: Reading comprehension,
- 40 minutes: listening comprehension,
- 16 minutes: Speaking,
- 75 minutes: writing
The exam can be done as a paper version or on a computer. The individual test results flow into the final result in equal parts.
The costs of the ILEC
Since the examination fees are determined by the respective examination centers, participants must inquire about them locally.
